ONLINE COURSES

The Crater Criminal Justice Academy is continuing to provide On-Line training to our agencies. 

Please read below for additional information, you may enter the On-Line training website by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

Software Requirements

All computers that will be used by students that are participating in on-line training should be equipped with the Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or newer) browser, the Sun Microsystems Java Virtual Machine (version j2re 1.4.1) and the Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 (or newer). Installation of the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer (if the full PowerPoint program is not loaded) is also recommended to allow greater course design flexibility. All of these programs are available as free downloads by clicking on the “Software” hyperlink located on the Getting Started page. 

Course Registration

Students must register through the agency’s Training Officer with the registration form found at the back of the calendar or on the website. 

The registration must have the student’s complete name with middle initial and Social Security Number. 

Upon confirmation of registration, classes are available and maybe accessed ON-LINE based on the following schedule:

January 1 – March 15
April 1 – June 15
July 1 – September 15
October 1 – December 15

Course Completion

After successful completion of the course, the Academy will be notified and the student will be awarded credit hours toward their in-service training requirements. Students must complete the entire course in which they are enrolled in order to receive in-service credit. No credit will be awarded for partial completion of a course.

Students must score 70% on all required quizzes in order to successfully complete a course.  Students will be afforded two opportunities to achieve a passing score.  Upon requests from a failed student’s agency administrator (Chief or Sheriff), the student may be granted a third opportunity to re-take the failed quiz.

Any student that experiences difficulty with on-line training may contact RLSEI personnel for assistance at support@rlsei.com. Students may also contact the academy staff. There is no guarantee of an after hours response but every effort will be made to assist the student as soon as possible.

Course description:              This course meets the Virginia requirements for Animal Control Officer Re-certification.

Course title:                         Emergency Vehicle Operations Refresher

Course description:              This course was originally designed to fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated for driver training instructor re-certification. However, as a result of the increased need for in-service emergency vehicle operations training, the scope of the course was increased and it is being made available as refresher course for criminal justice officers.

Course description:              This course is designed to meet the Department of Criminal Justice Services in-service training requirements for officers or deputies with a primary certification as a jailor, civil process server or court security officer.

Course title:                         Law Enforcement In-Service

Course description:              This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated in-service requirements for law enforcement officers.

Course title:                         Legislative Updates 2008

Course description:  This course will meet the Department of Criminal Justice Services requirements for legal in-service hours. The course includes legislative updates in six areas: General, Criminal, Traffic, Juvenile, Jailor/Court Services and Animal Controls for the present year.   

Course title:                      Jailor/Court Services/Law Enforcement In-Service

Course description:              This course is designed to meet the Department of Criminal Justice Services in-service training requirements for officers and deputies with a primary jailor/court services certification and a secondary certification as a law enforcement officer. 

Course title:                      Jail Suicide - Prevention and Detection

Course number:                    JS0804 

Course description:              This course will examine the issues involved in the prevention and detection of jail suicide.  Although this course is intended to help prevent suicides in the jail, a central theme of the course is that suicide prevention requires a cooperative effort between the arresting and transporting law enforcement officers, jail staff and mental health or medical staff.  In addition, much of the information contained in this course would be beneficial to law enforcement officers should they encounter a suicidal person on the street.

Course description:              This course is designed to meet the Department of Criminal Justice Services in-service training requirements for officers and deputies with a primary jailor/court services certification and a secondary certification as a law enforcement officer. 


Instructor Re-certification Courses

 Course title:                         General Instructor Re-certification

Course description:             This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated General Instructor re-certification requirements.

Students who complete this course will be re-certified as a General Instructor and will earn 4 hours of career development in-service credit. 

You must complete this class in addition to any specialized Instructor      re-certification.

 
Course title:                         Firearms Instructor Re-certification

Course description:              This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated Firearms Instructor re-certification requirements.

All Firearms Instructors must successfully complete the General Instructor Re-certification course in the same online training period.

Course title:                         Defensive Tactics Instructor Re-certification

Course number:                    DTIR0801

Course description: This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated defensive tactics instructor re-certification requirements. All Defensive Tactics Instructors must successfully complete the General Instructor Re-certification course in the same online training period.  Students who complete this course will be re-certified as Defensive Tactics Instructors

Course title:                         Driver Training Instructor Re-certification

Course description:              This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated Driver Training instructor re-certification requirements. All Driver Training Instructors must successfully complete the General Instructor Re-certification course in the same online training period.


Course title:                         RADAR Instructor Recertification

Course description:  This course will fulfill the Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated RADAR Instructor re-certification requirements. All RADAR Instructors must also successfully complete the General Instructor Re-certification course in the same online training period. Students who complete this course will be re-certified as a RADAR Instructor

 


Generic Courses (no DCJS Credit)

 
Course title:                         Line of Duty Death Benefits

Course  number:                        LODD0801

Course  description:                   This course will meet the requirements under § 9.1-407 of the Code of Virginia that specifies all law-enforcement or public safety officers must receive training concerning the benefits available to them or their beneficiaries in case of disability or death in the line of duty. This course is based on a model lesson plan developed by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.

 

This class does not offer DCJS In-Service Credit, but does meet the requirements under § 9.1-407 of the Code of Virginia that specifies all law-enforcement or public safety officers must receive training concerning the benefits available to them or their beneficiaries in case of disability or death in the line of duty.

 

Course title:                         Bloodborne Pathogens

Course number:                    BBP0801

Course description:              This course will familiarize the student with the various bloodborne pathogens, methods to reduce exposure, and steps to follow in the event of exposure to a bloodborne pathogen. This course meets the OSHA refresher training requirements for criminal justice officers.

 

This class does not offer DCJS In-Service Credit, but does meet the OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.1030 for annual refresher training requirements for criminal justice officers.

 

Course title:                         FAA - Flying Armed for Law Enforcement Officers

Course number:                    FA0801

Course description:              This course will fulfill the Federal Aviation Administration's requirements that all criminal justice personnel who must fly in a commercial aircraft while armed must undergo training in the proper procedures for flying armed (Revised 2007) 

 

This class does not offer DCJS In-Service Credit, but does meet the requirements under Title 49 CFR1544.219 and 1544.221 for Flying Armed.
